Education and Welfare in
the Budget of Delhi Government
Allocations on education and
welfare in the Budget of NCT of Delhi, presented by
finance minister A.K. Walia in the state assembly on
22 June 2009, has the following highlights:
1. Rs. 1,032 crore has been
earmarked for education, comprising 10% of the
overall budget.
2. There is a hike in freebies
such as scholarships and contingency grants for
higher education. Accordingly:
a. Students of class IX and X
would get Rs. 600 for purchase of books, whereas
those of XI and XII will get Rs. 800 for this.
b. There is a hike in
scholarship of students of Delhi College of
Engineering (for PG from Rs. 5000 to Rs. 8000 and
for PhD from Rs. 7000 to Rs. 12250 plus a
contingency of Rs. 17500).
c. No fee will be now onwards
charged from physically challenged students for
their training in Delhi ITI.
3. Under the Social Welfare
programme, the following allocation has been made:
a. 50 new recreational centers
will be set up for senior citizens in addition to 38
present ones.
b. Financial assistance of Rs.
1000 per month will be provided to senior citizens
(overall 2.5 lakh, senior citizens, 21000 widows and
3500 unemployed persons to be benefited during
2009-10).
c. Rs. 1000 per month will be
provided to destitute women as subsistence
allowance.
d. Monthly allowance of Rs.
1800 to leprosy affected person.
e. 20% increase in merit
scholarships and technical/vocational scholarships
for SC, ST, OBC and minority students. |
